Deciding MBA colleges and more…
After deciding why I want MBA degree, it’s a time to decide on colleges and what is more important to get into one of those colleges. It’s a very tough question but not as tough as I can be! Stubborn! ha!
I’ve decided my colleges based on following criteria.
1. College suits your career needs: I think this is the most important question that you need to ask yourself, i.e. which college suits your career needs, i.e. how a particular b-school is going to help you achieve your goals. I’ve centered mainly on
I may add few more colleges depending on my requirement. (Check out Entrepreneur’s Ranking of Sustainable Degree here.)
as I want to do my MBA in entrepreneurship. You need to look what you want from colleges and what those colleges can offer to you! You need to have a road-map about how you are going to transform you career. In my case, I’m mechanical engineer and I want to start my own business in renewable energy and along with this start a online education company. Big dreams! Ha! So, I definitely should need to know what I need to look from college and what I need to give. Think on what skills college can help you to build in.
Further college is surely going to ask why our college? You need to search on this question, why particular college? The brand names are okay but college doesn’t listen to the brand name, colleges need specific reasons why their college!
2. Ranking of the colleges: Every now and then many business magazines publish ranking of b-schools. Some of them are Business Week, FT, US News and Business Insider. Check out the ranking and circle on the colleges which you are going to apply.
3. Location, Industry & more: You need to some idea about the location of your college and after completing you MBA where you are going to work. Which industry you are going to work? Your target companies? Which role you want to play in the company? CEO! Where you stand today in-front of your dreams? How to lead the transformation process? What you have done till now to achieve your gaols? College is definitely going to ask all these questions in interview! You can’t say to the ad-com that after MBA I want to work for Google or McKinsey. It can be true you get a chance to work for dream company but ad-com would have listened to this answer more than thousands times. So, chose your answers reasonably. Chalk out your unique personal story, everyone is special and do have interesting things to tell ad-com. Just dig out your personal story. I do have good personal story and I just need right words to express that story! Work on your work experience examples which you may be writing in the essays. While showing work experience examples you need to focus on the schools perspective on your take, i.e. you need to balance out your application.
4. Money Matters: Next is the money that matters most, i.e. you need to think how much your MBA s going to cost you. You can’t chose a college which costs you insanely (exceptions applied!), yes I chose Babson college, which costs much more than any other college because it’s ranked best for entrepreneurship from last almost 20 years!
While preparing for GMAT and in the process of essays start volunteering yourself and keep on adding work experience under your belt!
